The Band Of Holy Joy – Had A Mother Who Was Proud: And Look At Me Now

The band was formed in 1984 by Johny Brown, along with friends including Brett Turnbull. The Band Of Holy Joy are a truly unique proposition. Combining the dark but unapologetically humane poetry of singer Johny Brown with the instrument action of Chris Brierley (violin) and Alfie Thomas (accordion, keyboards), as well as many other more occasional contributors, BOHJ built a loyal international fan-base for their by turns romantic and bleakly humorous songbook. On this recording they sound a lot more electronic orientated than there later indie rock style, the track Disgust still gives me the shivers, as it all sounds so familiar when I was a teenager. Had A Mother Who Was Proud: And Look At Me Now was released as a 12″ by Flim Flam Productions (HARP 1T) in 1985.

A dive into the industrial, experimental, minimal synth and post-punk scene anno 1985.
