Penumbra is one half of :zoviet*france:, “Skandinavien” takes source recordings made in Skandinavia and twists them with minimal beats and ambient textures. This disc seems to combine the best of ambient, the best of investigative soundings and the best of speculative and surreptitious noise. Great slowly developing tracks with an organic droning spacey sound which kicks you over the clouds but not to the dark outer space. It’s like a dream you dream in an aeroplane to skandinavia. Some turbulence’s may wake you up, but in all it’s ethereal as well as very dynamic and raw. Field recordings are mixed carely with electronic sequences, static beat loops, drones and ethereal voices. Track five, push forward with a very strange “broken”beat. The last and longest track starts with some minimal rhythm, 2 wobbling, chorus driven synthienotes, field recordings and archaic chants. then there is a longer silent part followed by urban field recordings with a strange click clack sound, which changed over the time the frequency. Then again a longer silence part till the end of the CD. Great Trip! Skandinavien was released on CD by Iris Light Records (i-light 015CD) in 2001. Big Thanks to Marcus!
