Rolf Enström – TNT

TNT

Rolf Enström’s work comes for the most part from his ability to combine playfulness with a strict, stubborn exploration of timbres. Though his compositions are often base on ideas sprung from literature, news and philosophy, timbre is also a great focus. Through the years he has fought for electroacoustic music as a means of expression. The combination of instruments and tape forms another important direction in his development as a composer. This is another excellent minimal electronics album. Some explanation is needed for tracks 3 to 5: “A surprise awaits the record listener on Side B when the cartridge ( record needle) glides into the grooves of TNT . Tónal – Nagual – Tsentsaks are namely engraved parallel to each other and not, as is customary, sequentially. Thus, it is not the listener, but rather chance, which determines which of the three works will be heard. The odds are one in three that the listener will hear the intended work and this frequency ratio is independent of the number of times the record has been played. The listener can also participate in the performance of TNT . By intentionally or unintentionally moving the cartridge ( record needle) between the grooves one may hear what is happening on the ‘other channels’ and can create new combinations of the three works.” So the tracks 3 to 5 are recorded how they appear on the record, the 3 tracks are each 7 minutes long , but are in fact one track of 7 minutes with an endless playing order. If you have mixing programs on your PC you can experiment with the above explanation of how the track should be played, have fun. TNT was released on vinyl by Fylkingen Records (FYLP 1031) in 1986.
