Beyond Entertainment

Excellent experimental, minimal synth and ambient tape from 1984. What I could find about the bands: UV POP: John White is U.V. PØP – singer, songwriter and guitarist. A one- man band for the 80s. When he began to play live in the early part of 1982, his ´band´ consisted of nothing more than himself plus a series of pre- recorded backing tapes. The arrangement proved both pragmatic and effective; it allowed John to present his music to the public to his own best advantage. As Richard Strange once sagely observed: ´A Revox doesn´t answer back.´ Tom fazzini: vibraphone player of West Yorkshire band A Small Good Thing. Possession : in 1980, Stephen Thrower formed POSSESSION with Victor Watkins and Anna Virgina War (aka Tiny, currently singer of indie group Ultrasound). They released one album: The Thin White Arms, Obtusely Angled At The Elbow, Methodically Dipping And Emerging (A-Mission, 1984). Label boss Gordon Hope was also briefly a member. O Yuki Conjugate : O Yuki Conjugate is an organic ambient musical group, sometimes based in London. Their music has also been categorized as darkwave, but perhaps more gentle than others in that genre. Members of the group vary, but include C. Elliot, R. Horberry, T. Horberry, A. Hulme, M. McGeorge, D. Mudford, and P.A. Woodhead. Instruments on the recording Peyote include tongue drums, roto-toms, bongos, congas, “big bean,” “found percussion,” drum machine, wind chimes, loops, frying pan, bass, samples, keyboards, fractal guitar, e-bow, flutes, chants, radio, wildlife, tablas, berimbau, nose-singing, and vocals. Their music is, apparent from this list, percussive and inventive, but it is also atmospheric. Mute Calm : was a project of some members of O Yuki Conjugate. 391: Founded in the first quarter of 1978 by Mark Lancaster of The Instant Automatons and photographer/artist John C. Hocknell, they began making infrequent lo-fi recordings of what has come to be known as “industrial noise” – a sort of performance-art with musical instruments – which they hoped would reflect the movement from which they appeared to take their name. “391″ was a Dadaist magazine edited by Francis Picabia, although recently Hocknell has affirmed that he originally conceived of the name during a visit to the local library – 391, in the Dewey Decimal classification scheme, is the category for “Costume” . This explanation, however, is generally held to be a complete and utter fabrication on Hocknell’s part, especially by the other members of 391. Beyond Entertainment was released on cassette by Final Image (FIC 3) in 1984.
