Throbbing Gristle – In The Shadow Of The Sun

In The Shadow Of The Sun

In the Shadow of the Sun is an improvised “score” created by Throbbing Gristle for the Derek Jarman 1980 super-8 film bearing the same title. It is an example of what Throbbing Gristle founder Genesis P-Orridge called “Ambient video”, used to “enhance or complete an environment.” In the Shadow of the Sun has drawn comparisons with the ambient music works of Brian Eno, Pink Floyd circa Ummagumma (1969) and krautrock stahlwarts Ash Ra Tempel. In the Shadow of the Sun premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in February 1981, where it was received enthusiastically by the audience. In The Shadow Of The Sun was original released on vinyl by Illuminated Records (JAMS 35) in 1984. Re-released on CD by The Grey Area (TG CD9) in 1993.

The Darkening Scale – Wind In The Wires

Wind In The Wires

Wind in the Wires represented something of a departure from The Darkening Scale usual highly structured style and was influenced by my (David Janssen) work with Sylvie Walder in The Tapeworm Vessel, leading to an exploration of a more open, atmospheric approach. Recorded at a time when I was getting bogged down with what would eventually become Hydrogen Kaleidoscope, Wind in the Wires was an effective way of blowing away the cobwebs suggesting new avenues to explore. The other big influence was a nostalgia for the way Brian and I used to sit around with two guitars just experimenting to see what appeared. Wind In The Wires is only available as an MP3 download.
